ClimateLaunchpad, the European Union’s cleantech enterprise platform, is the world’s largest cleantech business idea competition. The competition is an opportunity for Irish entrepreneurs to take part in a European competition that will see them present their green business pitch, value proposition and business model to a national jury.

It aims to discover Europe’s most promising cleantech innovations – be it an innovation in renewable energy, a sustainable transition in the food chain, a mind shift in urban mobility or another way to tackle climate change. It now works with partners in 30+ countries to support new cleantech startups by offering training, coaching, and support. The mentoring process starts with 2–day bootcamp where Climate-KIC trainers cover everything that is required to jumpstart a cleantech business. This is followed up by intensive coaching to ensure businesses have perfected their pitch, value proposition and business model in time for the National Final.

Business ideas are generally aligned to one of the Climate KIC themes:
• decision metrics and finance,
• sustainable land use,
• sustainable production systems and
• urban transitions.

These themes also align with a number of key areas on Ireland’s national research prioritisation list – in particular:

  • Smart Cities and Smart Grids,
  • Sustainable Food Production and Processing and
  • Marine Energy.

2016 sees Sustainable Nation mentoring 8 teams for the Climatelaunchpad National Final on September 1st. Business ideas range from harvesting crickets to produce protein for energy bars, to innovative models that focus on domestic demand response to developing equipment that will reduce emissions and improve the efficiency of timber processing. The top three teams will go to Estonia to represent Ireland in the European final.

Climatelaunchpad is an initiative of Climate-KIC, Europe’s largest climate-change innovation platform. Sustainable Nation is the manager for the Climate-KIC Ireland hub.
